The aging Kabuki multiplex cinema was transformed into a new upscale cinema featuring stadium seating in 2007. Sundance cinemas claim to have all their cinemas built sustainably in an innovative architectural design, to have full bar and restaurant service and to bring the finest selection of art, independent, foreign and documentary film programming to cities across the United States. The Sundance Kabuki has a Japanese-inspired design, fitting to its dense urban home in San Francisco’s Japantown. The organizers say that many of the materials, such as the reclaimed wood, carpet, seat backs, bar tables and sign blanks, are directly recycled or contain recycled materials.
